Winter Curatorial

Over the weekend, I received several emails from Hollywood containing photos of bikes in his personal quiver. One of the emails was titled, Bike of the Day, so I expect more treasures to be forthcoming.

Check out Hollywood's new crabon belt-drive fixie. The nameless Entourage-member extraordinaire pictured looks non-plussed to be in the photo.



But it's not all new-styling retrofitted Madones. Hollywood goes old-school with his throwback freeride Raven. Check out those carbon spins! Nevermore, nevermore.

Warrior Professor-Princess

I ran into the Professor yesterday while he was on his way to an evening symposium of libations and dialectics. He mentioned that he plans to race the new singlespeed CX class this weekend in Cary and Raleigh because all competitors can add on a second race for only 5 dollars. Then me chastised me for making excuses for not racing, telling me that if he plans on racing four times next weekend surely I could manage to get out there at least once. It goes without saying that my shame is monumental, but then I see the bike honoring his Japanese heritage the Professor will be racing in said singlespeed class this weekend and my shame is doubled over. Slay on Warrior Professor-Princess!

Bastille Day Let Down

I was planning on riding yesterday to celebrate Bastille Day in high style, but I couldn't find my silk cravat. No ride.

Baby's First King

In my never-ending search to be as cool as the cool kids I made my first Chris King headset purchase last week. Never mind that this is years after CK headset became de rigeur among cycling's elite and wannabes alike, and that as of yet the headset isn't actually on my bike, not to mention the fact that I bought it used in a shady eBay transaction (is there any other kind?), now I can proudly lift my head amongst fixie-hipsters, retro-riders, and big-hit bombers alike. In short, I have arrived. (Or will when I press the damn thing in.)

I'm going to ignore the facts that current internet scuttlebutt says that King's O-ring design is inferior to the Cane Creek 110's, and the even the cool Kingers have moved to the sotto voce design, because -- dammit! -- I want in the cool kid club!

I'll let you know if the damn thing miraculously takes a pound off of my bike, I'm suddenly admitted to some uber-hip Albany bike speakeasy, ladies begin to swoon before the Ferrous, or I suddenly get a lot more street cred. (At this point I'd be OK if it makes the 13 year olds at the park quit making fun of me, but whateva.)

So, yeah, I'm cool now. Really, I promise. And my bars spin like grease on ice. But I'll never be as cool as this:

From a classified advertising the sale of square-tapered RaceFace cranks sent to one of the local listserves this morning, recognition of Professorial Style in an imagined dialogue:

Hollywood's New Ride

Loyal readers will recall that Hollywood announced his plans to purchase a new mountain bike at the end of the season earlier this year. After Sauser's win at mountain bike world's H. told me that the 2009 Specialized Epic would be his chariot. But at other times, our star has indicated acting on his long held preference for hardtails. In the spirit of the Professor's query, it's time for the readers to decide Hollywood's new ride. Specialized rolled out its 2009 models this week and Hollywood is among many things, a Specialized man. What will it be friends? The 21 lbs carbon Epic dualie? The 19 lbs carbon Stumpjumper, billed the "new hardtail for hardcore riders"? Who is more hardcore than Hollywood?

2008 NC State Games- Mountain Bike Championship

Greensboro- Bull City Cycling had a strong showing at today's NC State Games Mountain Bike Championship. Chris, Dave, JD, and I made the trip out to the host venue, Greensboro's Country Park. We found a fast, well-marked, non-technical course to our liking. Chris, Dave, and JD lined up for the ultra-competitive single speed class which had one of the day's larger fields. After three fast laps Chris came in for 1st place, JD a close 4th, and Dave a strong 5th place. Chris has a bling gold medal and statewide bragging rights. BCC will also be designing a jersey indicating his new status. Start sending in ideas. Below, Chris on the podium's top step.
I fared well with a 3rd place in the very lightly contested Sport Men's race. Apparently, the cool kids aren't riding gears anymore which makes for easier placings. Or the gear-loving crowd forewent the state race for the 12 Hour Cowbell Challenge which was in held in Charlotte today. Here's my podium shot.
